Who Needs a Commercial Standby Generator?

Healthcare facilities (required by NFPA 99/110), data centers, financial offices, grocery and convenience stores with refrigeration, restaurants, manufacturing plants where downtime stops production, warehouses with cold storage, assisted-living facilities, and any business that loses revenue or risks safety during a utility outage. Louisville's storm-driven outages make commercial standby a strong ROI investment for most small and mid-size businesses.

    • Service-entrance-rated and non-SE ATS configurations

    Our Generator Installation Process

    1

    Load Study & Sizing

We meter your facility's actual load profile and recommend the right generator size. Oversizing wastes capital; undersizing trips on starting current.

    2

    Design & Permits

We design the ATS configuration, fuel system, pad, and electrical interconnection. We pull all permits and coordinate with LG&E for gas service if required.

    3

    Installation

Pad, generator, ATS, gas line, and electrical work — all by Hadley crews. Most commercial installs complete in 5-10 working days from generator delivery.

    4

    Commissioning & Training

We start, test, and load-bank the unit. We train your maintenance staff on weekly exercise, oil checks, and the controller. NFPA 110 commissioning documentation included.

    Commercial Generator Cost Factors

Installed cost depends heavily on size, fuel type, ATS configuration, and site conditions. Typical fully-installed ranges in the Louisville market:

    • 20-50 kW (small office, restaurant, retail): $15,000 - $40,000 installed
    • 60-150 kW (mid-size commercial, clinic, grocery): $40,000 - $90,000 installed
    • 150-300 kW (manufacturing, large commercial): $90,000 - $180,000 installed
    • 400 kW+ or paralleled systems (industrial, healthcare, data center): $150,000+ installed
    • Cost adders: long gas runs, deep service-entrance work, fuel storage tanks, paralleling switchgear, sound attenuation

    Commercial Standby Generator Installation FAQs

How long does a commercial generator install take?

Most 20-150 kW commercial installations take 5-10 working days on site once the generator and ATS are delivered. Lead time on the equipment itself is typically 8-20 weeks depending on brand and size — we quote both lead time and install duration upfront.

Do you handle the gas line and concrete pad?

Yes. We coordinate the gas line with LG&E (or your propane supplier), design and pour the concrete pad to manufacturer spec, and complete all electrical interconnection. You get one contractor, one schedule, and one warranty for the whole project.

How often should a commercial generator be load-bank tested?

NFPA 110 requires monthly exercise under load (at least 30 minutes at no less than 30% of nameplate kW) and an annual full-load test. Healthcare facilities under NFPA 99 have stricter requirements. Our PM contracts include the monthly exercise verification and the annual load-bank test using portable resistive load banks.

What's the difference between standby and prime-rated generators?

A standby generator is rated for emergency use only — typically up to 200 hours per year — and runs only when utility power fails. A prime-rated generator is built for continuous duty and is sized for higher operating hours per year. For backup power during utility outages, standby is the right rating; for off-grid or supplemental power, you need prime.

Do you install Generac, Kohler, and Cummins?

Yes. We install all three major commercial brands. We'll recommend the best fit based on your fuel availability, size requirement, lead time, and budget — we are not locked into a single manufacturer.

    Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Our preventative maintenance plans include semi-annual or quarterly visits, oil and filter service, coolant testing, ATS exercise, battery load test, and annual load-bank testing. Contract customers get priority emergency response. Hours: Mon–Fri 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, with 24/7 emergency service available.

    Why Choose Hadley Energy Solutions?

Most generator installers are either electricians who sub out the gas, or HVAC/mechanical contractors who sub out the electrical. We hold both Master Electrician (ME64500) and HVAC Master (HM06538) licenses, plus Kentucky Electrical Contractor (CE64623), so the full scope — fuel, pad, generator, ATS, switchgear, NFPA 110 documentation — happens under one roof. We've installed standby systems for medical offices, restaurants, distribution centers, and manufacturing plants across Louisville and Southern Indiana since 2013.
